Ruffino - Riserva Ducale
Chianti Classico
Tuscany 1997
This wine takes us all the way back to September 2002, when we traveled to Italy for 10 days. We loved just about everything about Italy - from the stunning Amalfi coastline to the rolling hills of Tuscany - and one of our favorite day excursions was wine tasting in Greve in Chianti. To this day, we still talk about how high tech the wine tasting was - you put money on a card (with a magnetic strip) and then use it to buy samples of wine and olive oils at various prices. The entire process is completely automated and allows you choose from hundreds of options. We'd love to see something similar in America. Anyway, out of every wine we tasted that day, our favorite was the '97 Chianti Classico. It was robust in flavor and smooth in texture (and, trust us, we had a lot to compare it to). Therefore, we brought a bottle home and saved it until Spring of 2005. When we uncorked it, it was just as good as we'd remembered. An outstanding wine from one of the best Tuscan vintages. More than worthy of a special occasion - just be sure you're drinking a '97.
