Thadd's Price-Wine Score Ratio- P/WS Ratio

A valuation ratio of a wine’s current price compared to its Wine Spectator Score.

For example, if a wine is currently selling at $20 a bottle and has a Score of 91, the P/WS ratio for the wine would be 0.21 ($20/91)  vs. 0.60 ($55/91)

Also sometimes known as "wine multiple" or "wine scoring multiple".   

In general, a high P/WS suggests that wine lovers are drinking over-priced wine and wasting their money.

We selected this Spanish sparkling wine to toast our first lobsters of the summer 2005 season because it had a great write-up and an affordable price. Overall, this sparkling wine was decent – pretty dry without a lot of sweetness. It was light and easy to drink, but nothing made it particularly memorable. In general, we prefer sweeter champagnes (i.e. Moet’s Nectar Imperial), but for those of you who favor the dry side, this might be worth a try.

A Birthday Toast

Seaview Brut- Southeastern Australian Sparkling Wine

We had never tried sparkling wine from Australia before we tasted this Seaview Brut at a Giles wine tasting last fall. We were immediately impressed, because this sparkler doesn’t try to be anything it’s not – unlike so many inexpensive champagnes. Seaview Brut is light and refreshing with a perfect balance of fruit and dryness. Each sip is soft on the palate with a crisp finish. And the value at $10/bottle is unbeatable. Definitely worth a try! We enjoyed it so much that we popped a bottle to toast Alice’s birthday in November.

Drank: October 27, 2004 – We popped the cork on this sparkling wine as Keith Foulke fielded a ground ball and threw to first to bring the Red Sox their first World Championship since 1918. We were so excited that it was hard to notice the taste of this sparkling wine, but it seemed to get better with each glass. It was consistent with most Mumms – sweet but not sugary, light fruit juxtaposed with buttery flavors. The perfect way to toast a long-anticipated victory!
