Penfolds
Koonunga Hills
Shiraz Cabernet
Southeastern Australia, 2002
Even though we’d seen the Penfolds label many times on wine store shelves, we’d never actually tried this brand until our friends Emily and Marc brought us a bottle when they stayed with us over President’s Day weekend. We didn’t open the wine for more than a month, finally trying it with a Ming Tsai ginger flank steak recipe we cooked up for Sunday dinner. The full-bodied wine held up well with the meal but definitely seemed more of the everyday drinking variety than something for a special occasion. The wine is enhanced with oak character, and while the tannins are noticeable, they’re not overbearing. One of the most distinctive characteristics of this wine was its aroma, which reminded us of a cigar. We’d heard this description used for wines before but never actually experienced it ourselves. This is one of the few Shiraz blends we’ve tried, and we look forward to trying more, particularly 100% Shiraz. Also, it will be interesting to see what else the Penfolds label has to offer.
